PATRIA POTESTAS · JUS SANGUINIS

The painting The painting depicts a self portrait separated in two legal frames that imposed violence towards my motherhood; The Jus Sanguinis which is the legal system in Spain that do not recognize the children of migrant families, such as mine, born in the Spanish territory as nationals, imposing them to go through the institucional racism of the immigration office since they are born and on the other side the Patria Potestas which gave power and control to my child’s absent father who used the judicialization of my motherhood to inflict gender violence against me.

Following the Latinamerican tradition of artists such as Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis the painting also is a tribute to Frida Kahlo painting The two Fridas as well as her narrative and difficult experience with motherhood.
